Declaration of Multi-Part AC ESS Assembly UL9540 Conformity
Purpose:
This document specifies the Fortress battery models and associated UL1741 inverter and charge controller systems and configurations which will maintain conformity with UL9540 testing standards.
Applicable Battery Models:
o eFlex 5.4 kwh
o eVault MAX 18.5 kwh
Background:
The Fortress Power eVault MAX and eFlex batteries are DC energy storage systems certified to the ANSI/CAN/UL9540:2016 1st Ed. Energy Storage Systems and Equipment standard.
The Fortress battery contains all necessary safety components to meet UL9540 test requirements as a DC ESS as defined in UL9540 1st Edition. UL 9540 2nd Ed. does not utilize the DC ESS term, implying that such systems must be combined with UL1741 charging equipment as part of an AC multi-part ESS assembly, despite all required safety features being met by DC components contained within the battery unit. While the concept of a DC ESS system is being reintroduced in UL9540 3rd Ed., it is still convenient to identify configurations of 3rd party UL1741 equipment which conform to UL9540 AC multi-part assembly nomenclature. However, AHJs should understand that the operations of any 3rd party components of an AC multi-part assembly fall outside safety protections required to meet UL9540 1st and 2nd Ed. standards because the DC-ESS protects itself independently of any Power Conditioning System (PCS) connected to it. Therefore, any UL 9540 DC-ESS, certified by an NRTL, already conforms to UL9540 standards and should not require an independent Certificate for the entire multi-part electrical ESS “system”.
The following diagram depicts a UL9540 certified systems with applicable battery models, including basic DC ESS boundaries and Multi-Part AC ESS boundaries. A table is provided to help jurisdictions in verifying appropriate 3rd party UL1741 equipment configurations approved for Fortress minimum sizing standards.
